Pattern

R1: Chain until you reach desired width for placemat.

Note: Since this pattern uses the suzette stitch, it needs to be an even number.

A standard placemat size is 12 inches wide by 18 inches long.

For mine, I did 34 chains (about 9 inches, I wanted a smaller one).

CH1, turn. (including this CH, the total # of chains will be odd)

R2: Now we’re going to do the suzette stitch for the rest of the pattern. To start that, both SC + DC in the 2nd st from your hook, skip the next stitch.

Then, for the rest of the row: (SC + DC in the next st, skip the next st) Repeat until you reach the end of the row.

CH1, turn.

R3 and onwards: Repeat R2 until you reach the desired size of your placemat. For mine, that was about 20 rows in total (~7 inches).

If you want to add a border, follow the last steps below. Or, fasten off here and weave in ends and you’ll be done.

Border

Attach yarn of another color for the border, CH1.

SC around the placemat.

Note: Going down the sides can be a bit tricky, I tried putting 1 SC every 1 cm or so and it turned out fine. Just do the best you can, it doesn’t need to be perfect!

For the top and bottom of the placemat, I placed 1 SC in each stitch or chain.

Put 3SC in the corners (see images below).

For more info on doing a SC border, I found this video by
iknitwithcatfur (not affiliated) to be very helpful.

To finish, join the round with a slip stitch into the first single crochet of this round. Fasten off and weave in ends.

And you’re done! I hope you had fun making this placemat!
